Back and neck pain are among the most common reasons Australians seek physiotherapy, and among the most commonly mismanaged. At The Physio Joint, we do not simply treat the area that hurts. We identify the mechanical source of the problem, explain it to you clearly, and build a structured treatment plan that targets the root cause rather than the symptom.
Our team has more than 50 years of combined physiotherapy experience, with specific postgraduate training in spinal assessment and rehabilitation. Whether you are dealing with a sudden onset of pain after a heavy lift, a long-standing neck problem from years of desk work, or a complex spinal condition following surgery, we have the skills and the clinical depth to help.
The spine is a single, interconnected structure running from the base of your skull to your tailbone. Problems in the lower back can influence how you hold your neck, and dysfunction in the cervical spine can generate pain that travels into the shoulders, arms, and hands. This is why treating the back and neck together, with a whole-spine perspective, often produces better results than addressing each region in isolation.
Back and neck pain can arise from a wide range of structures, including the intervertebral discs, facet joints, muscles, ligaments, and nerves. Identifying which structure is at fault, and why it has become irritated, is the foundation of everything we do at The Physio Joint.

If your back or neck pain is accompanied by numbness, pins and needles, weakness in the arms or legs, or changes to bladder or bowel function, please seek assessment promptly. These symptoms can indicate nerve involvement that benefits from early, targeted intervention.
Our Mayfield clinic is led by AHPRA-registered physiotherapists who hold postgraduate qualifications in spinal assessment and rehabilitation. Practice Director Damien Cummins has a particular clinical interest in chronic spinal pain and is currently engaged in research relating to cervicogenic headaches and upper cervical dysfunction. Under his leadership, our team maintains a commitment to evidence-based practice and ongoing clinical education.
We are deeply integrated into the Newcastle health community. We work closely with local GPs, orthopaedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, and pain specialists to ensure that patients who require tertiary medical care are referred promptly and to the right practitioner. If physiotherapy alone cannot resolve your condition, we will tell you honestly and guide you toward the next appropriate step.
We also offer HICAPS on-the-spot private health fund claims, making it straightforward to use your extras cover at every appointment.
For many people, back and neck pain is episodic. It improves, then returns under stress, after periods of inactivity, or following changes in workload. At The Physio Joint, we address this cycle directly by equipping you with the knowledge and physical capacity to manage your own spine between episodes.
This includes education in movement patterns and ergonomics specific to your work and lifestyle, postural correction strategies for prolonged sitting and screen use, progressive strengthening programmes that protect the spine under load, and review appointments that allow us to update your programme as your needs change.
Our goal is not simply to get you out of pain. It is to give you the understanding and the physical tools to stay out of pain.
You should seek an assessment at The Physio Joint if any of the following apply:
No referral is required. You can book directly with us online or by calling 02 4967 2677. If you have a Chronic Disease Management plan from your GP, you may be eligible for a Medicare rebate for up to five sessions per calendar year.
In most cases, no. Our physiotherapists are trained to conduct thorough clinical assessments that identify when imaging is genuinely necessary. Routine X-rays and MRIs for non-specific back and neck pain are rarely required in the early stages and are not recommended by current Australian clinical guidelines. If a scan is warranted, we will advise you and liaise with your GP accordingly.
This depends on the nature and duration of your condition. Acute back and neck pain often responds well within three to six sessions. Chronic or complex conditions typically require a longer structured programme, and your physiotherapist will provide a realistic timeline after your initial assessment.
Yes. Cervicogenic headaches originate from dysfunction in the upper cervical spine and are one of our areas of specialist clinical interest. Our physiotherapists are trained in techniques specifically designed to address the upper cervical joints responsible for generating head pain. You can read more on our [Headaches and Migraines treatment page].
In the majority of cases, yes. Disc herniations and bulges frequently respond very well to physiotherapy, particularly using the McKenzie Method. We will assess your specific presentation and advise you honestly on the likely response to conservative treatment and the realistic timeframes involved.
Yes. Physiotherapy is covered under the extras component of most Australian private health insurance policies. We offer HICAPS on-the-spot claims at every appointment, so you only pay the gap on the day.
If back or neck pain is limiting what you can do, a detailed assessment at The Physio Joint is the clearest path to understanding what is wrong and what will fix it. Our team is ready to help you move freely again.
